[The dream bubbles weren't bad at all. As terrified as he had been when he finally woke on Prospit to find Jack hovering over him, now things didn't seem so bad. He didn't have to worry about surviving now... so why worry at all? It wasn't like he didn't have friends here. The people he loved? They were safe. They'd been hurt, they'd been killed, but... they were safe here.]

[He's taken to sitting on his front lawn, at this point, staring up at the unfamiliar, captivating sky. He's not used to this yet, really... but he's been warming up to the calm.]

[Death is something Gojyo always thought was inevitable. He'd been close to it so many times, caused it countless more, and mortality had become a part of his everyday life. This fact did not, however, make dying any easier to handle. When he'd been separated from the group, lost over the cliff-side in a sea of enemies, it was a panicking fear that had swallowed him whole. All he could grab onto with the Shakujou was another youkai at the top of the cliff, giving him a partner in his fall. Over the sounds of battle, he could hear Goku shouting for him... and the last voice that reached him before the wind of his fall rushed over his ears was Hakkai's.]

[When he woke up in the bed of a forest-dwelling, self-proclaimed doctor several days later, he knew what had happened. He'd been found. Saved. But not by his team. Questioning, which the doctor said was pushing himself too much (it was a miracle that he'd survived, obviously), only confirmed his suspicions. Of course, the next several weeks were spent recovering from the ridiculous amounts of damage the fall had done to his bones, though this was only achieved by the pushiness of his savior. Gojyo didn't want to wait. He wanted to leave. Waiting showed that his companions hadn't found the man's house, or any sign of him. Maybe they searched for a day or two, but knowing Sanzo... it hadn't taken them too long to get going.]

[It was well over three months before he'd begun walking again. It was another few weeks before he was able to get his strength up enough to work out, which he made a point to do at a damn near constant in order to get completely recovered.]

[But when he had, he didn't bother chasing them down...]

[He made the trip back home. He had no idea where he was going, no idea what to do to follow the group. He was tired. Left behind. They were far too gone to follow at this point, and all he wanted to do was go home...]

[It took him another few months to make the journey. Much faster, on his own, without the assassination attempts that the sutra brought, but hard. Lonely, not that he'd admit it...]

[For the last several years, he's never had to admit it. It's a weakness, he's realized, as he sits alone in the dimly lit house. It's silent, but for the sound of the insects in the evening sun. As his eyes trail down his legs and to the tabletop where his feet sit, he can't help but imagine the sound of Hakkai's pleasant voice. Of course, he would be smiling at him, but Gojyo would be able to see the venom under it.]

[For good measure, he puts his feet on the floor, leaning over the table and putting his head in his hands.]

[He never should have let Hakkai get to him. He knows that being alone is easy, when your companions don't give a shit about you. But when you have a friend--a partner, you can't just forget. Even if he can put on a face for the townspeople, for the grocers, for the bartenders....]
